Her parents are Mexican and American. She has always been an avid sportsperson. Gerina started playing golf at the age of she was 15 years old. Gerina completed her high school education in Goddard High School. The school won at the New Mexico State Golf Tournament in her high school years. As a volleyball player, she participated in state championships. She began attending in the University of Texas. She won all of the tournaments she played in during her final years. During her undergraduate career she was crowned Conference USA individual champion player of the year and UTEP Female Athlete Of The Year.
